Looking for Newborn Baby Photo Session Ideas ? If you are expecting and planning to have a newborn photo shoot of your little one, I am sure you wonder about different poses, set ups and ideas for that moment. Let’s face it, everything is new and unknown when we first get pregnant. There is an overwhelming amount of information out there and things we have to research and get ready for. From nutrition during pregnancy, choosing countless gadgets for the new baby to worrying about labor, delivery , breastfeeding ….. It surely is a lot.
I am here to make your life a bit easier, by showing you and explaining the process of a typical newborn photo session. Trust me, it doesn’t have to be scary and complicated.
What should I bring to the photo shoot ? This is the most common question I get from expecting moms. In my session prep guide, that every one of my client gets upon booking, I go over in details on how to get yourself and the baby ready for the session. I guide you through the soothing techniques, to the dietary choices, clothes and items that could come handy during the session. Many parents are too busy and overwhelmed to think of every single detail so this list becomes extremely helpful when getting ready.
My studio is filled with most of the items you and your baby may need during the session. I have diapers and wipes, blankets and burp clothes, props and accessories and everything in between. I do ask to bring extra milk and pacifier if the baby uses one.
During my newborn photo sessions we actually relax and have fun. I know it sound strange but that is exactly what I want you to do . Just sit down and watch me work my magic. I know you are tired , sleep deprived and have hormones rushing through your body so I try to make this whole experience as relaxing as possible. After you walk into my studio, I take your baby and start posing her / him and tell you to just enjoy the moment.
There are countless Newborn Baby Photo Session Ideas , different poses and set ups. Before a session I send each mom a questionnaire where she lists her wishes and ideas. She tells me her preference in terms of colors, poses, props and accessories. I also ask her to send me photos of a nursery and the main living space so I can get the over all idea of my client style.
Below are some Newborn Baby Photo Session Ideas for the beanbag. Although it’s a bit hard to explain, these poses are done on a giant beanbag and covered with variety of posing fabrics. Babies are naked or semi naked, covered with outfits and accessories.
I try to do most of these poses during a typical photo session, however it greatly depends on individual baby. Some newborns are more alert then others and get fussy when touched. In those cases I try to get more accessories and more angles from each pose and transition the baby from each pose more smoothly. I also don’t attempt more “risky ” poses where I know the baby might wake up and get cranky. If the baby is very relaxed and sleepy I will try most of these poses.

Here are some Newborn Baby Photo Session Ideas with props. After the beanbag poses I usually transition to prop poses. Those props include variety of baskets, buckets, little beds, moon and heart props. I love styling these set ups and adding different textures , colors and other natural elements. Most of my expecting parents ask for neutral set ups and I am happy to oblige.

Next come some Newborn Baby Photo Session Ideas with parents. Family and Sibling part of a newborn photo session is probably my favorite part. It’s so beautiful to see a new mom cradling her precious new baby in her arms. And a new dad trying to be so gentle while holding his tiny son or daughter. Proud big brother or sister giving a little hug and a sweet kiss to their new sibling . All that love makes these moments really breathtaking .
How about some special, creative, artistic Newborn Baby Photo Session Ideas? I got you there as well. I absolutely love using digital composites to add variety to my client’s galleries. Digital backdrops give us an a lot of options that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to create in studio. We can choose any color, theme, design … possibilities are endless.
Since I ask my clients to give me ideas on what they envision for their newborn session, I am able to plan ahead and shoot for those particular digital backdrops. Not every photo of your baby will look natural in every composite so again, planning ahead is very important when it comes to creating these special images.
I’ve recently opened my own Digital Backdrops store on Etsy. You can view all my new designs HERE
