Getting awake baby photos during your newborn photography session is not as easy as it seems. A lot of parents ask for these , however, it is impossible to guarantee such images.
My newborn photo sessions are done in the first 2 weeks of your baby’s life for a reason. Babies are still very sleepy and relaxed. I can easily pose them and they don’t mind being moved and touched. When they do wake up is usually to eat. Even then they often keep their eyes closed through the feedings. That makes a session go smoothly and as a result parents get those angelic sleepy photos of their baby.
Most of the time, when the babies are actually awake, they want to be fed or changed. They don’t just pose looking at the camera, instead they make silly faces, cross their eyes, flail their arms and become fussy. Getting those perfect looks and smiles and capturing them on camera is like winning a lottery.
Newborns are sensitive to light so they don’t like opening their eyes too much during the day and prefer darker, dim places. Their eyelids can be puffy and they might not be able to open their eyes completely either. Babies don’t focus well at first, which is why their eyes may seem out of line or crossed at times during the first few months. Only by 8 weeks babies begin to more easily focus their eyes on the faces of a parent or other person near them. By that time getting awake baby photos might be more possible.
There are few times when babies are so relaxed that even when awake they stay in a pose and actually look at the camera. Those make for amazing images. Most of the time these are older newborns with a well established feeding routine.
