Why is Newborn Photography Expensive?

Common question I get from people inquiring is Why is Newborn Photography Expensive? As a top newborn photographer in NJ I understand that newborn photography can be an expensive investment. Having a baby is expensive to begin with-  the nursery, gear, clothes, diapers. It all adds up really quick and the cost scares a lot of parents.

I get it, that was the reason I took my firstborn to JC Penny for his newborn photo shoot. I didn’t know that I will live to regret it and wish I researched and invested in a professional baby photographer to preserve these fleeting memories. Instead , I got a photo of my uncomfortable baby plopped on a dirty blanket. The saying that you do get what you pay for is totally true.

Newborn skills and expertise

Firstly, newborn photography requires specialized skills and expertise. Photographers who specialize in newborn photography have invested time and resources into learning the art of capturing those precious early moments. They have honed their skills in handling newborns SAFELY, posing them in adorable positions, and creating beautiful compositions. This level of expertise comes with a higher price as it requires continuous training, practice, and ongoing education to stay updated with the latest techniques and trends.

Newborn Sessions are Long and Slow

Another reason why Why is Newborn Photography Expensive is the time. A typical newborn session can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. This extended duration is necessary to accommodate the needs of the baby, including feeding, soothing, and allowing for breaks when needed. Additionally, photographers spend a lot of additional time in post-processing, carefully editing and retouching each image to ensure the highest quality and aesthetic appeal.

Cost of props and accessories

Furthermore, newborn photography involves a significant investment in equipment and props. Professional-grade cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and editing software are essential tools for capturing and enhancing the images. Additionally, photographers often invest in a wide range of props, such as blankets, wraps, baskets, and accessories, to create unique and personalized setups for each session.

When I say I spend about $20,000 per year just on props, I am not kidding. A single newborn ourfit can cost $100 and a maternity dresses ran about $300-$500 each. I never skimp on those items since in my opinion quality matters. When you come to my studio and see the fabrics, wraps and bamboo props, you will know they didn’t come from Walmart.  Hope you can understand now Why is Newborn Photography Expensive.

Cost of Running Business

Moreover, the cost of running a photography business should be considered. Like any other small business, we pay a lot of taxes. Photographers have various expenses, including studio rent, insurance, marketing, website maintenance, and ongoing professional development. These costs are factored into the pricing structure to ensure the sustainability of the business and to provide a high level of service to clients.

I hoe you can see Why is Newborn Photography Expensive. The higher cost of newborn photography can be attributed to the specialized skills and expertise required, the time-intensive nature of the sessions, the investment in equipment and props, and the overall expenses of running a photography business. While the price may seem high, it reflects the value and quality of the service provided, ensuring a memorable and cherished experience for parents and their newborns.
