What is the best age for newborn photos?

This is one of the most common questions I get as a NJ newborn photographer- what is the best age for newborn photos. When it comes to capturing the precious moments of a newborn’s early days, many parents wonder about the best age for newborn photos. While every baby is unique and develops at their own pace, there are certain factors to consider when determining the ideal time for these photo shoots.

Tiny fingers, tiny toes

I would say that, typically, the best age for newborn photos is within the first three weeks of the baby’s life. During this time, newborns are still very sleepy and tend to curl up easily into those adorable poses that parents love to see in their photos. Their delicate features, tiny fingers, and toes are also at their most delicate and pristine state, making for stunning and heartwarming images.

Within the first three weeks, newborns are also less likely to develop baby acne or skin rashes, which can sometimes appear later on. Their skin is usually smooth and flawless, making it so much easier to create beautiful images without having to too much editing and skin smoothing. Additionally, newborns at this age are less likely to have developed any head control, which allows me to safely position them in various poses without causing any discomfort or harm.

Furthermore, newborns are still adjusting to the world outside the womb during this period. They are more likely to sleep deeply and peacefully, making it easier for me to capture those serene and angelic moments. As they grow older, babies become more alert and active, making it challenging to capture those calm and tranquil shots that are often desired in newborn photography.

Every baby is different

However, it’s important to note that every baby is different, and some may be more cooperative or comfortable at different ages. The best age for newborn photos for one baby might be different then for another newborn. Some photographers specialize in capturing older newborns, around 4-6 weeks old, as they may be more awake and able to make eye contact, resulting in unique and engaging photos. Those photos would result in more of a candid, lifestyle photos which many parents love.

Ultimately, the best age for newborn photos depends on the preferences of the parents and the style of photography they desire. It is recommended to discuss with a professional newborn photographer who can provide guidance based on their expertise and experience.

It is never too late to photograph your baby

In conclusion, the best age for newborn photos is generally within the first three weeks of the baby’s life. During this time, newborns are more likely to be sleepy, have flawless skin, and be easily posed. However, every baby is different, and it’s important to consult with a professional photographer to determine the best age for newborn photos and capturing those precious moments that will be cherished for a lifetime.
