Session Planning
I did this child photography session for a long-time client of mine. This little cutie is Colin; I did his newborn session when he first arrived. I also did a few other photo sessions for his big brother Tyler and the whole family, so I’ve gotten to know them pretty well. Colin is a typical boy: always on the move! His mom, Elise, was worried that we wouldn’t be able to get any good photos with Colin’s short attention span. Because I’m a mom to three boys myself and an experienced children’s photographer, I’m used to working with the wiggles! We got some great shots of Colin and mom is very happy with the resulting photos.
Session Details
Toys are one of the keys to keeping little ones occupied! At my New Jersey photography studio I keep a collection of photo-worthy toys to use for active little ones. The toys do double duty as props and distractions. I used a couple to keep Colin busy and happy during this child photography session.
Most children this age are not enthusiastic about clothes, but we still managed to work a few different outfits into Colin’s session. Comfy clothes make it easy for toddlers to move and not feel restricted during their photo shoot, so I always have plenty of outfits on hand for parents to choose from.
Colin gave me some great expressions and lots of smiles. I love the mischievous glint in his big blue eyes! Active kiddos are only a challenge to photograph if the photographer is really set on posing them. I’ve learned to be flexible and go with the flow. It’s okay to let the kiddo set the pace and have fun in the studio, and it results in really genuine photos.
