As a New Jersey Baby Photographer, I absolutely adore photo sessions with awake babies. Contrary to the popular belief, those are not as easy to capture. When babies are awake they are usually unsettled and fidgety. They flail their arms and legs, making posing extremely difficult and even unsafe.
Babies eye muscles are not strong enough, which often results in cross eyes or what I call pirate eyes, one open and the other one closed. They can not hold an eye contact for a long time either so, as a photographer, I have to be very quick in capturing that special moment.
Many photographers will not even photograph an awake baby, They rather wait till the little one falls asleep before trying to pose him and capture some images. As much as I love having a sleepy baby, I never miss any opportunity to take awake photos of your precious newborn.
Awake Baby Sessions
As a New Jersey Baby Photographer I’ve picked up few tricks that help me in getting that alert look without the fuss. Number one would be swaddling! If you are going to learn anything at all as a newborn photographer, swaddling should be at the top of your list. Choosing the right type of swaddle and knowing how to do it correctly is the key. When the baby is comfortable in his/her swaddle, they will naturally relax and become content. Before they fall asleep you can safely pose them in a bucket or a basket and capture those awake shots.
Awake photos are always my favorites and definitely a hit with all the parents and of course this New Jersey Baby Photographer! There is something definitely special in capturing a photo of your little one’s big bright eyes.
